A Chinese court, citing inadequate evidence, overturned the guilty verdict of a blind activist who was sentenced to more than four years in prison after documenting claims of forced abortions, his lawyer said Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006. Nicaraguan Legislature Passes Bill That Would Ban Abortion In All Cases, President Expected To Sign It Into Law

Nicaragua’s Asamblea Nacional, the national Legislature, on Thursday voted 52-0 with nine abstentions and 29 not present to pass a bill that would ban abortion in all cases, and Nicaraguan President Enrique Bolanos is expected to sign the measure into law, the New York Times reports (Lacey, New York Times, 10/27). South Dakota’s Abortion Ban Is A Threat To Women’s Health

In this week’s BMJ, a senior doctor raises serious concerns over abortion law in the US state of South Dakota.Earlier this year, South Dakota passed a bill which bans virtually all abortions in the state except for circumstances in which the procedure is necessary to “prevent the death of the mother.” Under this new legislation, doctors face prosecution for the termination of any pregnancy in which maternal death is not clearly averted by its performance.
